Note to the Fifth Edition

Thirty-three years have passed since the first edition of this atlas, and four years since the last (fourth) edition. When the first edition appeared, it took the story up to 1967. Ninety-five maps trace the British story from 1967 to 2010. The most recent maps cover Britain’s military involvement in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan and Iraq, as well the conflict in Northern Ireland since 1967, from violence to settlement. The evolution of political powers to Scotland and Wales, the growth of nuclear power, and the spread of wind farms both off-shore and on-shore are all features of this new edition, as are immigrations and eco-towns. The General Election of 2010, the 2010 budget and the Coalition Government’s expenditure cuts each have a map, as do the sites for the 2012 London Olympics both in London and outside it.
